The Government of Sikkim on May 20, 2026, extended the odd-even vehicle restriction across the state with immediate effect.
The State Government, in supersession of Notification No. 58/Transport/2024 dated October 24, 2024, has extended the Odd-Even Vehicle Restriction across the entire State under Section 115 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, pursuant to Notification No. 51/Home/2026 dated May 14, 2026. Under the restriction, odd-numbered private and government vehicles (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) may ply only on odd dates, while even-numbered vehicles (0, 2, 4, 6, 8) may ply only on even dates. The restriction does not apply to commercial vehicles, goods vehicles, taxis, two-wheelers and electric/battery-operated vehicles, and private vehicles are exempt on Saturdays and Sundays. District Collectors may issue exemption passes for private vehicles undertaking essential or exigency-related activities such as marriages, death rites and examinations. Emergency and essential service vehicles are also exempt, subject to verification by the police. District Collectors may further facilitate school car-pooling passes for groups of 3–4 children during specified school timings. For inter-district movement of official vehicles, prescribed prior approvals and online vehicle passes through the designated portal are mandatory.
The notification comes into force with immediate effect and remains in force until further orders.
